OUR SHOP

Franklinton Cycle Works has a large selection of refurbished and “as-is” bikes, as well as new bikes from Batch and Retrospec available for sale. FCW also sells e-bikes from Denago and Buzz. Looking for a kids bike, something to cruise the bike path, or an affordable commuter? We’ve got a wide range of bikes — from brands like Trek and Specialized to boutique builders like Franklin Frames and the occasional vintage gem like a Colnago. Since we’re donation-based, you never know what you’ll come across. There’s something for every budget, and every bike is tuned by a professional mechanic and ready to ride. Stop in and see what we’ve got!

Shopping at FCW supports our mission and our many charitable programs. We also offer a large selection of used and new parts including locks, light sets, tires and tubes, racks and bags, and so on. And if we don’t have something in stock, we'll point you to one of the many great local bike shops in Columbus that does carry the item you’re looking for.

FCW is also a great place to work on your bike! We have professional grade stands and tools that make adjustments and repairs a cinch. We also have all the oils, greases and cleaners on hand for your use. Become a member and take full advantage of our shop.

Franklinton Cycle Works is what’s known as a non-profit social enterprise. As a non-profit, we’re mission-driven and grounded in our values of empowerment and community building. As a social enterprise, we strive to be financially self-sustaining.

FCW works specializes in used bicycles because we believe in environmental stewardship and the importance of restoration. Bikes, while fun and responsible transportation, require the use of non-renewable resources. The restoration of used bikes requires far fewer new materials and fosters the art of bringing new life to the forgotten and underappreciated.

OUR MISSION

Building Bikes. Building Connections. Building Community.

A community bicycle shop is different from a regular bicycle shop. Around here, bike repair is a cooperative effort rather than a way to make money. What we’re doing isn’t just about building bikes. It’s about building relationships and bringing a community together. Our shop space, stands, and tools are available free of cost for anyone who wants to work on his or her bike. And volunteer mechanics are on hand to share their knowledge and experience.

FCW believes that everyone and every interaction is valuable.

FCW is a place of co-working and co-learning. We believe everyone has something to learn and something to offer which means no matter who you are, you have a place at FCW. Together, we're building more connected, more empowered individuals and a more vibrant neighborhood.

It is our hope that these ideals will diffuse the social fabric of Franklinton and Greater Columbus.

FCW IS YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD BIKE SHOP

THERE IS A LOT TO LOVE ABOUT THE COMMUNITY OF FRANKLINTON

FRANKLINTON CYCLE WORKS IS A CYCLIST'S BEST FRIEND

OUR COMMUNITY

At Franklinton Cycle Works, we love being a part of this community’s growth and development. This is the oldest community in central Ohio and the original settlement in Franklin County. There’s great architecture, a thriving art scene, really good restaurants and craft breweries, and a lot of wonderful people here. This place has a rich history and we’re proud to join our friends and neighbors in ensuring Franklinton also has a bright future.

Our bike-building love started in a residential basement in Franklinton. As we saw neighborhood kids riding bikes without brakes and lots of people walking, we saw an opportunity to take our love for bikes and turn it into a community effort, working together with residents to get our community rolling on two wheels. Today, our extensive supply of bike parts, our network of mechanically-inclined volunteers, our open shop sessions, and a growing passion for bikes in general is helping make our vision a reality. Franklinton is a great community and we’re proud to be here.

BICYCLES FOR INDEPENDENCE

FCW is thrilled to offer the Bicycles For Independence program to Columbus residents experiencing financial constraints and difficulty securing transportation. We collect information to ensure we serve program participants well and for grant reporting purposes. Unique identifying information will never be released to the public. Program participants will receive an email once the referral form is received and validated.

ADVOCACY

We’re helping Columbus folks stay employed, get an education, or visit with friends and family by overcoming transportation barriers through affordable access to bikes and bike repair!

Transportation is vital.

Transportation Insecurity is closely associated with chronic poverty, and 1 in 5 of our Columbus neighbors currently live below the poverty line. This means the majority of them don’t have reliable access to transportation. Without transportation, finding and maintaining a job becomes an insurmountable task.

Thousands of Columbus residents struggle to get where they need to go daily.

For many, a bicycle can provide a way forward. Despite cycling being the primary mode of transportation for many people across the county, studies show that 60% of low-income residents report bicycle costs to be the primary barrier to cycling, while another 25% report the costs of repairs to be a major obstacle. This is why Franklinton Cycle Works exists. Franklinton Cycle Works proudly provides the space, parts, tools, and knowledge to offer our neighbors affordable access to two wheels. We want to empower all of Columbus to take advantage of the benefits of biking while building a strong, tightly-knit biking community.

BFF-logo-navy-gold

We envision a bike-able community where all people are empowered to bike safely and with regularity.

Bike Friendly Franklinton (BFF) is an engaged coalition committed to improving the health, safety and well-being of Franklinton residents by advocating for active transportation and appropriate infrastructure.

Overarching Coalition Goals:

  • Increase active transportation access, advocacy, and opportunities; decrease dependence on personal vehicles.

  • Increase physical activity and knowledge of bicycling utility and benefits in children.

  • Educate residents on current laws and bast safety practices for cycling.

  • Advocate in support of built infrastructure that enables safe and regular biking.

Because bike-able communities are safer, more vibrant, and better connected.

BFF is a diverse coalition of businesses, non-profits, public agencies, and community members. The coalition is co-chaired by Franklinton Cycle Works and Columbus Public Health. If you’d like to get involved, please contact Dana Dorsey at DMDorsey@columbus.gov.
