VOLUNTEER NIGHT
Volunteer Night is a great way to get involved at FCW. Some of our volunteers are experienced mechanics while others have no mechanical knowledge at all, but are interested in learning how to repair and maintain their own bikes as well as helping others do the same. The shop isn’t open for repairs on Volunteer Night so we can focus on getting things done around the shop, getting to know one another better, and further developing our skills.
On Volunteer Night, we typically focus on:
-
fixing bicycles to be sold through the shop
-
disassembling bicycles that are better used for spare parts
-
cleaning the shop space
-
sorting used parts
-
labeling and pricing
-
creative art projects in the shop
-
making shop improvements
-
and so on
Whatever your interests, FCW has a place for you as a volunteer! We look forward to meeting you.
For questions regarding volunteerism in the shop, please email us at info@franklintoncycleworks.org.
Volunteer Night is every Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30PM. Come visit us. Pre-registration is not required.
OPEN SHOP
Open Shop is a bike commuter's best friend. Bring in your bike and use one of our six complete work stations and our large selection of tools to work on it. We have volunteer mechanics and books to help you along in your repairs. Best of all, Open Shop is totally free! You don't have to pay for your time on the stands or the help you may receive from a volunteer mechanic. Open Shop is a charitable program designed to help the under-resourced overcome transportation barriers and get them where they need to go.
Hopefully our extensive collection of used parts and new parts will help you complete your repair. Since our inventory of used parts depends entirely on donations, we may need to refer you to one of Columbus’ many great traditional retail bicycle shops if we can’t fix your bike together here.
Our Open Shop sessions are designed primarily for adult commuters, requiring children under the age of 16 to be accompanied by an adult. For youth education, check out our youth programs.
Open Shop is primarily run by volunteers, so if you like what’s happening at FCW, consider volunteering!

BICYCLES FOR INDEPENDENCE
FCW is thrilled to offer the Bicycles For Independence program to Columbus residents experiencing financial constraints and difficulty securing transportation. We collect information to ensure we serve program participants well and for grant reporting purposes. Unique identifying information will never be released to the public. Program participants will receive an email once the referral form is received and validated.
YOUTH PROGRAMS
FCW works with a wide variety of organizations around the city to offer youth programs. We specialize in the provision of bicycles, helmets and other accessories, as well as teaching basic bike maintenance and repair. But we may also be able to help facilitate riding programs such as bike rodeos for young kids, street riding smarts, and bike path etiquette.
If you represent an organization that works with kids (schools, after school programs, church, rec center, etc.) and would like to host a bike program, please email us. We’d love to talk about a potential partnership. Please note that FCW does not self fund these programs. We are happy to collaborate with partners on fundraising and/or grant applications.
